Circles of Influence
From the day we arrive on this Earth we are subject to a host of influences dictating who and how we will be. Our family units, peers, and culture all impact the way we view ourselves and conceptualize our identities.
Individuals internalize messages from family, peers, media, and culture, which can create a framework for self-identity that may align with or diverge from authentic self-expression. Deconstructing the messaging we have received allows us to make decisions about whether we want to continue adhering to these inherited standards and roles, or if we would like to choose differently. Either choice has consequences that we must weigh to determine which choice will serve us and our communities best.
Intentionality derives from the ability to make informed choices; whether that choice is conforming to the labels given to us by outside influences or choosing to create one’s own way of being. Through intentional decision making we claim our personal creative power and pave the way for authentic self expression.
Practice: What have society/family/peers told you about who you are or are supposed to be? How have these messages impacted your self-concept and expression of identity?
Challenge: What has been helpful or harmful about the messages you have received? What social/family/peer conditions have you grown out of? Which ones are still relevant?
