Something Sacred
Tuning into the sacred context that houses us all is a skill of perception worth honing. Psychologist Abraham Maslow believed humans were wired for transcendence—our brains, our bodies are facilitators of self transcendence and spiritual awakening. He is most renowned for his work on the Hierarchy of Needs and the concept of self-actualization, yet his theories of human psychology transcended traditional Western ideas of selfhood and psychological functioning. Maslow proffered that humans had unique access to a capacity he termed, “B-consciousness.” A spiritual state of mind that deepened one’s sense of meaning and purpose in life through a lived sense of interbeing.
B-consciousness aka Being-consciousness, points to the human capability to tune into a sacred context, and both conceptually and viscerally experience being a part of something greater and holier than themselves. This form of consciousness is the mental-emotional component of spirituality. Through enabling B-consciousness we are able, to not only access spiritual insight, but also experience the benefits of living through such insight.
For example, one can theoretically understand that they are part of an interconnected context and inextricably woven into the texture of the universe, however it requires a fully attuned conscious awareness to experience this reality as such. This kind of experience opens a person up to many gifts, from an abundance mindset to deeply felt belonging. When one understands they belong, because they are piece and part of the universe, there is no impetus for existential dread for one can perceive the impartial benevolence of the Greater Context. Not dissimilar from a secure attachment to a caregiver or partner, B-conscioucness provides a sense of security in the relationship one shares with their “higher power.”
Practice: How would you describe your connection to the greater contexts of community, planet, and universe?
Challenge: Find the triggers and points of disconnection in your life. Is it within your sense of self? Is it from your fellow Earthlings? Is it through nihilism or polarization? Critically analyze the whys and hows of disconnecting. What would happen if you chose connection instead?
