Making Space

Life can become easily cluttered. We have duties, obligations, goals, dreams, daily life tasks, all competing for our time. Adulting is often overrun with by the millions of little details that must be attended to in order to survive in our world. These responsibilities, as essential as they are, can overtake our sense of meaning and purpose, clouding what truly matters. You may wonder, what does truly matter? Although this differs individually, there are some key aspects of meaningful life, mainly our connection to Self and Community.

Our connection to Self, is the intimacy that comes from knowing we belong in our own skin, in our minds, and in our hearts. When we feel connected to ourselves we do not dwell on questions of self worth, for our innate dignity is unequivocal.

Connection to Community can be our local environment as well as our planet and place in the expansive universe. Fostering a connection to Community is an important part of recognizing our inextricable interconnection and interdependence with all beings on Earth, and the Universe at large. To truly feel at home we must understand that we are a part of big family, a Community of Earthlings.

Practice: Step outside and look around, are there trees, people, fauna and flora? Take a moment to see yourself in the living creatures around you. Visualize yourself as that creature and that creature as you. As you exit the visualization, take a deep belly breath and feel the sensation to life blooming throughout you.

Challenge: Do not be discouraged if this is difficult at first, continue to practice and eventually you will be able to viscerally sense your oneness with all of life. The challenge here is to not give up even though results may not be immediate.
